The major part of this week was waiting for my parts to come out of the shop. So, in the meantime I help where I could. For example I help setup for the after hours business event that was setup to reach out to the community of Durango. During that event I was able to take my family around and show them what Stoneage does and what I had been doing for them. We also had another small event known as the salad potluck. Basically you brought something that you thought would go well with a salad and sat and ate salad.
On Thursday the parts came out of the shop and I did some testing with them. I had two different ideas to try and solve the problem. One has the nickname "X-box" because it forms an X where the hose goes. The other is simply extending the guide block. The "X-box" didn't end up working like I had hoped it would. The hose would still move and get pinched and the smallest hose could fit into the sides of the X. However, the more simple guide block extension did work to solve the problem and even at pressures as low as 20 the hose would not get pinched. The next day in the morining I helped clean up the old inventory where the event was housed. After that was done I went back to my desk and wrote up the data I had collect the past day and a report on the problem and my two solutions so that when I left the other engineers could pick up where I left off. It was sad to leave, I enjoyed working with Stoneage. I got to meet a lot of great people and had lots of fun along the way. I would like to thank Stoneage for allowing me to come and work for them. Now I'm off to Spring break. Time does fly. This week seemed to breeze by. Of course there were a couple of days that were slow and methodical, but overall I am surprised that there is only one more week in my internship. I have been enjoying myself in this internship. This last week I finished up visiting the majority of the departments of StoneAge except for small assembly, which I hope will happen next Monday.
The work on my project has come to a short halt in which I have to wait for the piece to come out of the shop to test with. Making Friday much slower than anticipated. However helpful I was for organizing downstairs in preparation for next Thursday's event. After the product comes out of the shop I will have to do plenty of tests to see if what I created actually solves the problem that the ABX was having. Rick told me that his first project, a high pressure seal, took him 3 months of testing before he had a product that was complete and ready to go out to costumers. So, it would be a miracle if I could have mine ready to go by next Friday. Other than that I have had another great week at StoneAge and look forward to the next. First week completed. I have had a great time at my internship this far and there seem to be only sunny days ahead. Being the first week of course there are so many people to meet. I am nearly the 200th employee. That is what I have been doing for what feels like the most part of the week. Going from department to the next. For example the first day, after I went out for lunch, I hung out with the machinists and learned about welding as well. Which is actually more scientific than you think. Then on Thursday I went to Large Assembly and actually got to put together some of the parts that StoneAge sells.
After the time I spent with the departments I would go to my desk and work on learning Solidworks, a CAD software. And by Wednesday I had started to create the part I am working on for my project. The project I am currently working on is something that makes it so that when the ABX-500(Auto-Box 500) runs and feeds the hose to a tool it doesn't lose its grip on it. We are currently thinking of something like a funnel or something that will just make the hole smaller than what it originally is. Thus far I have had a great internship and look forward to continue working. See you in a week Janae. I think that I am prepared to go to work when this internship begins, but who knows what it will entail. I wish that I could have been more refined and prepared for my interview, but seeing as it was my first I had an acceptable interview. It was hard to find the time in my day to work on preparing for LINK and when I did have time I seemed to forget to do what I needed to do. Otherwise I think that my experience thus far has been good and I look forward to learning about what it is like to be a mechanical engineer.
